Tattoo Etiquette - How to behave in a tattoo studio?
How to approach a tattoo shop? What should I send in my email? Can I bring people with me to my tattoo appointment? Should I turn up earlier or right on time?
What to send in my e-mail or dm? For a smooth and faster booking provide information such as description of the idea, reference images of tattoos or designs you like, size, placement and your availability.
Do NOT haggle over the price! A lot of artists are happy to work with your budget, so just let them know about it. Or try to find a cheaper artist and hope the quality is not much lower. You are paying for the artist’s time and skill.
Hygiene: have a shower before and make sure you arrive clean.
Alcohol and drugs: Don’t arrive under the influence of these substances. You will be sent home and lose your deposit, as well as waste yours and the artist’s time.
Parfume: Don’t wear an excess amount of parfume or other scents.
Be on time: It is best to arrive 10 minutes before your appointment. Don’t be late, but don’t arrive too early. Grab a coffee or have a walk if you have too much time beforehand.
Communicate! If you need to have a break, want to eat some food, want to stretch or anything like that, just let your artist know!
Bringing someone with you: This is fine in most studios as long as it’s only one person. It is a good idea to ask your artist about this, just in case they don’t have the space to accomodate or they maybe even fine with more than one person.
Use a headphone: If you decide to watch your podcast, movie or doom scroll on social media with the volume up, so it won’t interfere with other clients session or the music played by the studio.
Clothing: Wear clothing that allows full access to the tattooed area. Consider darker garments. Read more here.
Bring a book: I am always up for a chat but you can also read your book or magazines if you prefer.
Cancelling a tattoo session: See artists policies about it, but in general a longer notice is appreciated by your tattooer. You may also lose your deposit.
Be patient: The application of tattoos takes time, especially detailed designs. Be patient with the healing time as well. Read more about healing here.
